Both the hydrogen peroxide and the baking soda have been known to give results when used singly and have been used as home remedies for whitening the teeth for quite some time now,
As a matter of fact, a mixture of the two is bound to give better results.
This remedy is used by mixing the hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and forming a sort of paste, which is then used as a toothpaste.

MUST HAVE PRODUCTS FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH MONTH

A roundup of my favorite products to help you celebrate Women’s Health Month. Everything you need from nutrition and supplements to apparel and fitness accessories!

May is finally here and there is a lot going on this month. It feels like Spring has finally arrived, it is National Free From Month (more on that in my next post!), and, most importantly, it’s Women’s Health Month. Whether you planned on celebrating or not, now you’re aware and you should really make the most of it! It’s a month fully reserved for us women to solely focus on ourselves and our wellbeing.
Let’s face it…most of us don’t make enough time for self-care. Even though it’s arguably one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, women, especially, don’t often prioritize it. So that’s what this month is all about.
Whether it’s eating cleaner, exercising more, sleeping better, reading and relaxing, or hanging out with the people who make you feel best, this month’s goal is to help you get back to putting YOURSELF first.
To help you with that, I’ve rounded up my favorite products that I am using in my own life to put my health back in order and make myself feel better. I hope you’ll find some new things to incorporate into your own daily life!

UV Blue Blocker Glasses by Zenni Eyewear

As someone who works on the computer for my various jobs, I understand the dangers of looking at screens for hours and hours at a time. That’s why I recently invested in a pair of UV blocking lenses from Zenni. The pair I got have clear lenses that block HEV blue light and provide maximum UV protection without distorting the actual screen colors too much. They protect my eyes from harmful blue light, while looking pretty cute and stylish! Zenni also sells regular glasses in their online store and a lot of other varieties of blue blockers as well. Highly reccomend them if you’re on the computer a lot! We can’t underestimate how much our usage of technology is going to negatively effect our eyesight in the future.

Aftershokz Trekz Air Wireless Headphones

After years of wanting to get wireless headphones, I finally bit the bullet and decide to get a pair from a brand that I feel GOOD about buying from. These open ear headphones from Aftershokz are exactly what I’ve been looking for. They are lightweight, don’t have ear buds (those things NEVER stay in my ears), and are totally affordable. Even cooler?! They don’t play music or media the same way other headphones do at all. Instead, they use BONE CONDUCTION technology, leaving your eardrums open to the environment around you. MUCH safer in my opinion.
These headphones are truly in a league of their own! If you want to try them for yourself use code KAILA30 until 6/30/18 for $30 off your purchase.

Water Lilly + Pear Chesapeake Bay Candle

Who loves candles?! ME!! *raises both hands HIGH*
There is nothing I love more than having wonderful smelling candles all around my house. Scents are so calming and comforting for me. One thing I have learned however…don’t skimp on buying HIGH QUALITY candles. Did you know certain candles can be HARMFUL to your health!? We’re talking ones that have tons of different ingredients as their base and are infused with unnatural chemicals and fragrances. Especially since I have animals running around my house, I don’t want any candles that could potentially fill our air with toxicity.
That’s why I always reach for candles from brands such as Chesapeake Bay. Their candles are soy based and deliver a clean burn. They are also infused with natural essential oils for their scent as opposed to fake chemicals. I love that they are 100% made in the USA, as well. My favorite scent is their Water Lilly + Pear candle from their Balance and Harmony line. It’s very fresh smelling and has amazing mood-enhancing properties.

The Myth of a Nice Girl by Fran Hauser

If you don’t know who Fran Hauser is, get ready for an education! Fran has held top positions at some of largest and most influential media businesses around the world such as: AOL and TIME. After making her own fortune, she is now an angel investor and was named one of Refinery 29’s “6 Most Powerful Women in the Tech Scene”. In other words, she is a TOTAL boss and strives to help women other women succeed in the way she has!
I LOVE her latest book, The Myth of the Nice Girl, because unlike other self-help or success guidance books, Fran’s book helps ambitious women work towards their business and financial goals without sacrificing themselves in the process. It can be SO hard to stay true to your morals, values, and mindsets in the cut throat world of entrepreneurship, but with Fran’s help you can navigate work’s most difficult moments. She offers specific insights and strategies that allow you to get ahead while staying true to YOU.

Curvy Strappy Sports Bra from Champion Sports

Recently I have had to invest in A LOT of new sports bras. I am one of those people who hates buying new clothes, so I will hold onto stuff for YEARS. But let’s face it, workout apparel from high school is not going to cut in my twenties. It was definitely time to get some new sports bras. While looking for something affordable, yet effective, I stumbled across the Curvy Strappy line from Champion.
In the past I’ve always gone with more minimalistic sports bras, but this kind from Champion is SO much more flattering. Especially since my body has changed so much recently! I love the molded cups for shape and support. Also, the smooth straps and band are super comfortable. No digging or rubbing anywhere. They come in so many fun colors as well! I got a ton of different ones to match all of my workout gear. A little birdy told me that they are on sale right now too!

                   Synergy Supplements

There is definitely a place for drugs and medical prescriptions in our lives. Somethings can simply not be fixed by diet or natural remedies alone. So you should never feel guilty or ashamed for needing to be on a doctor prescribed medication for your health. However, I do stand behind the fact that certain ailments AND overall wellbeing can be bolstered my natural supplements.

Lately, I have been LOVING the products from The Synergy Company. Two supplements I have been including in my daily diet are: Organic Beet Juice Powder and Turmeric Extract. I use the beet juice powder for a daily health boost of phytonutrients! Beet juice is also great for boosting stamina during physical activity because it improves blood flow and helps lower blood pressure. The turmeric extract, on the other hand, helps reduce inflammation, improves ability to digest fats, reduces gas and bloating, decreases congestion, and can improve skin health. I love both and have only had positive experiences taking them.

Even though the weather is finally improving around the country, a lot of people are still feeling under the weather. After being cooped up inside all winter with forced air vents, little sunshine, and less movement than normal, no one it feeling 100% themselves. Couple the unending winter with the start allergy season and you have a recipe for watery eyes, runny noses, and scratchy throats.
Take my dad for example, he suffers from allergies AND asthma, so these past few months have been particularly hard on him. He basically felt like he was perpetually sick all throughout the winter because of the circumstances. It was hard to see him suffer and not feel great for such a long period of time. I constantly wished there was something I could do to make him feel better and more comfortable.
Obviously this example hits close to home for me, but we all have had people in our lives that we care about that have been under the weather before. I’m sure you can relate to feeling pretty helpless in making their illness go away, but luckily there are a few things you can do to speed recovery and make them feel better throughout the process.
Today I’ve rounded up my go-to tips and tricks for helping someone “get well soon”. In my case, I came up with this list for my dad, but it’s applicable to any one in your life that you want to show how much you care. Obviously, these tips are not medical and may not actually heal the person’s sickness, but they certainly will brighten their spirits.

6 tips for a happier morning and good life

This image contains tips for a happier morning and good life

As we spring into warmer weather, and lighter days, we want to look and feel our best. Sometimes getting started in the morning is tough and if we could wake up more easily then we may feel better. While spring is about warm weather, spring cleaning and sunshine – it’s also a good time to try new routines. Dr. Mia Finkelston, who treats patients using LiveHealth Online, recommends some ways to change your routine and get moving in the morning.

  1. Be organized the night before.Pick out an outfit and have it ready so there are no stressful outfit changes to be made. Stick to this plan, though maybe you change the accessories at the last moment, staying on track with a plan can make you feel that you have accomplished something and make you feel less stressed.
  2. Read also: 16 simple lifestyles that can make you live longer
  3. Take a few minutes to stretch before getting out of the bed. If you tend to hit the snooze a few times, try instead to sit up and deeply breath as you stretch your arms, back and neck. It can be invigorating, keep you flexible (which we tend to lose as we get older) and makes you feel better.

  4. Take time to get ready. Get ready in your house as opposed to leaving little time and doing your makeup or hair on your way to work or even at work. Feel good about the time you spend on yourself, allow a few minutes more in your morning routine for this. In addition, it is much safer than when you put on makeup or do your hair in a moving car, train, or bus.

  5. Meditate. Take some time to think about how you are feeling as you get started in your day, not so much about the things you need to do, but more about how you feel. Address these feelings and you will feel calmer as you start the day. There are many great websites you can look at to help guide your thoughts.  There are many benefits for your health that are being recognized. Meditating can help manage depression, anxiety, smoking cessation and may lower blood pressure to name a few.

  6. Eating protein within 30 minutes of wake up. It can help you with energy, weight loss, and concentration. You don't know it until you try it. Most new changes we make take two weeks of doing until we feel and see the payoff, so give it a try.

  7. Make a morning ritual for yourself. It’s as simple as having a cup of coffee as you sit and watch the news for 15 minutes.  Perhaps you can read a book, take a run or go for a walk. Whatever it is, do it, and feel good about the fact that you are building a habit, having some "me time" or just calming down.  We all know that having a constant in our lives makes us feel safer, better and hopefully happier- these are all associated with good health too.

Why you should never sleep with wet hair

Why you should never sleep with wet hair
Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?   Our mothers have always told us that it is not good to go to bed with wet or damp hair, because we could catch a cold or pneumonia. Was this quite true?

The truth is that in fact not, however; Going to sleep immediately after taking a bath and not drying your hair properly, could prove to be a bad decision anyway. Why? That is the answer we want to give you today.

First, we must consider the moisture retained too long in the hair can reach inflame the scalp , causing an annoying itching sensation. This also causes damage to your mane, as the porosity of the hair surface is also increased.

That is why it is not advisable to stay too long with a towel around the head or capsthat retain moisture.

Other disadvantages of going to bed with wet hair are:

1. Headache

Sleeping with wet hair can always give your severe headache. This happens because during sleep the body temperature rises. As the body heats up, the moisture which has collected on the towel that you might have wrapped around your head can give you headache as there would be much temperature difference.

2. Hair Breakage

Wet hair tends to break much often. If you decide to sleep with wet hair, chances are bright that a lot of hair breakage is likely to take place. It would therefore never be a good idea to sleep with wet or dripping hair.

3. Expect a lot of sticky hair

If you decide to sleep with wet hair, you could end up with a lot of sticky hair, the other morning as the same will tend to entangle and bind among themselves. Those having long hair should always avoid sleeping with wet hair; else a lot of hair breakage along with a range of other problems will follow.

4.Infections

Pillows are an ideal place for bacteria as they absorb sweat, dead skin cells and body oils. Wet hair wets the towel and it carries moisture to the pillow which then becomes the nest for the development of bacteria.

5.Itchy

Sleeping with wet hair can cause different types of itching, this is due to the moisture that is formed in the skin of your head.

6. Muscle pain

Sudden temperature changes can not only cause muscle pain,  but it can also lead to severe cramps and even facial paralysis. This can eventually lead to paralysis of the whole body and cause death.

7. Dandruff

The moist scalp can interfere with the function of sebaceous glands present on the scalp. They can either start to produce more oil or reduce oil production. It can disrupt the natural pH balance of the scalp. As a result, you either have to suffer from dandruff or excessive oily scalp.

So if you want to prevent all these types of diseases and setbacks, you should avoid sleeping with wet hair. That is why it is recommended to use a towel after bathing, and also to keep your pillow and your sleeping space always dry. So, whenever you need to wash your hair, always do so during day hours. This would be always good for your overall health.

Simple remedies for hair breakage

This image contains Simple remedies for hair breakage

Are you losing sleep over dry, damaged hair that breaks and splits? We’ve all been there! Hair breakage is very often the result of harsh chemical treatments that cause loss of protein or improper handling of hair. A balanced diet also plays a part in keeping your mane healthy and glossy. By extension, lack of proper nutrients and unhealthy eating habits can also reflect upon the state of your hair. In rare cases, dry, brittle hair and hair breakage can point to a medical issue such as hypothyroidism. It’s a good idea to understand and address the underlying cause if your hair health is not all it should be. Aside from that, here are some simple but effective tips to make your hair stronger and fend off those unsightly split ends.
1. Avoid Damaging Hair Treatments
Damaged hair breaks easily. Avoid using hot curlers, blow dryers, or straightening or curling irons which expose your hair to heat and weaken it. Incidentally, even excessive sun exposure can damage your hair. So, if you must use heat styling products, don’t use them on a high setting or on wet hair. And always take care to follow instructions. Harsh chemicals present in perming, coloring, relaxing, and styling products can also make your hair more vulnerable to breakage.

2. Don’t Comb Wet Hair
Wet hair breaks more easily than dry hair as it’s more elastic. Brushing or combing, or even roughly drying wet hair with a towel, can cause damage. If you have straight hair, let it dry out a bit and then gently run a wide-toothed comb through it. If you have tight curls or textured hair, using a wide-toothed comb on slightly damp hair may be easier.
3. Nix The “100 Strokes A Day” Rule
“Brush your hair a 100 times before going to bed and you’ll have a shiny, glossy mane” – we’ve all heard this one, haven’t we! But rather than making your hair shiny or smooth, overbrushing can damage it and lead to split ends. So comb and brush your hair only when you’re styling it. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently untangle hair. Using a conditioner can also help tackle those tangles by reducing static. Vegetable oils like olive oil or almond oil work well as hair conditioners if you’re looking for a natural option.
4. Don’t Tie Your Hair Too Tightly
Ponytails, braids, or other hairstyles that pull and stretch your hair too tightly can cause it to break. Wear your hair loosely to prevent breakage.
5. Apply Argan Oil
Hair is mainly composed of proteins known as keratin which give it shape, elasticity, and strength. A study found that argan oil effectively reduced damage caused by hair coloring by minimizing protein loss. Massage it into your scalp and hair as a prewash treatment and lightly apply a few drops of it into your hair after washing to strengthen hair and tame your frizz and flyaways.

6. Condition With Cupuassu Seed Butter
Cupuassu seed butter is obtained from the seeds of Theobroma Grandiflorum , a tree found commonly in the Amazon region. It is rich in fatty acids like stearic, palmitic, oleic, and arachidonic acid. This seed butter works well as an emollient or a softening agent and can be used as a styling gel. It penetrates your hair to strengthen it, coats your hair shaft, and prevents loss of moisture. Studies have also found that it helps reduce protein loss from hair and limits damage due to hair coloring.
7. Get A Coconut Oil Head Massage
Coconut oil, thanks to its lauric acid content, can help strengthen your hair and prevent damage to it. Research indicates that lauric acid easily penetrates hair shaft and reduces protein loss from hair when used as either a prewash or a post-wash treatment. And it works not just on undamaged hair but also protects hair affected by UV rays, chemically treated hair, and even hair exposed to hot or boiling water. So, whether your hair has become weak and brittle due to sun damage, chemical treatments, or excessively hot showers, coconut oil can help. Massage this beneficial oil into your hair and scalp before you shampoo and apply a few drops of it after a wash for strong, shiny hair.
8. Apply An Egg Mask
Eggs make a great conditioning mask for weak hair that breaks easily. Their protein content is believed to make hair follicles stronger and reduce split ends. To make an egg hair mask, mix 2–3 eggs in a bowl till it has a smooth, lotion-like consistency. Spread evenly across hair and wash it off after a couple of hours. You can also whisk an egg yolk with moisturizing and protein-rich yogurt to get a double dose of protein. Leave this mixture in for around 15–20 minutes and then rinse off for stronger, well-conditioned hair.
9. Use A Banana Hair Mask
Got a couple of ripe bananas lying around? Don’t let them go waste. These fruits contain protein, fat, and vitamins which make them a great option for strengthening and moisturizing your hair. Puree 2 ripe bananas with a tablespoon of almond or olive oil and 2 tablespoons of honey. Wet your hair with warm water and apply this mixture, making sure that you cover your hair completely. Then cover up with a plastic shower cap and let the mask work for about 15 minutes. Rinse off for strong, glossy hair.

10. Apply A Beeswax, Castor Oil, And Olive Oil Balm For Split Ends
The only cure for split ends is a trim. Regular trims protect your hair ends from splitting and help hair growth by keeping hair healthy and stopping it from breaking off. But if you’re looking for a temporary fix, a homemade balm can help.
Melt 2 tablespoons of beeswax in a double boiler and stir in a teaspoon of castor oil and half a teaspoon of olive oil making sure that they blend thoroughly. Pour into a tin and let it cool. Apply to hair ends to temporarily seal split ends and prevent further damage.

3 simple ways to whiten your teeth

3 simple ways to whiten your teeth

Why do teeth get yellow?

To figure out how to whiten our teeth, we have to know why they get yellow in the first place. There are several factors that play a part, including genetics, what kind of food and drink you consume, and how well you practice oral hygiene. A tooth is made up of 4 tissues-enamel, which is the strong white covering that protects the tooth, dentin, which supports the enamel and is a hard yellow material that carries nerves, pulp, which is at the center of the tooth and contains blood and lymph vessels, and cementum, which covers the root of the tooth.
The enamel and dentin is what play the biggest role in color. Certain food and drinks will directly stain the enamel, yes, but over time the two biggest culprits are the nasty food and drink that actually break down the enamel, and weakening enamel as we age. As the enamel breaks down, it reveals the yellow dentin underneath. These remedies will focus on whitening teeth that have already lost some white enamel, but it’s also good to keep in mind that doing things to strengthen enamel is just as important so you can keep it from breaking down further. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (or whitening!)

1. Baking Soda and Lemon Juice Paste

Baking Soda isn’t a shocker here. Sodium bicarbonate (its official name) is mildly abrasive; gently scrubbing away surface stains to return teeth to a whiter shade. It’s also very alkaline (the opposite of acidic) so I would think if you have a very acidic mouth or eat a lot of acidic food, it could help balance out the Ph, which would be useful as acid breaks down enamel-this is strictly speculation on my part. It will also reduce the acidity of the lemon juice, which acts as a natural bleach of sorts. I use a mixture of baking soda and water on some days, and use the lemon juice on others, as I don’t want to overdo it.
You will need…
-Several teaspoons of baking soda
-Enough lemon juice or water to form a paste
-A toothbrush
Directions
Mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply.
Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes.

2. Strawberry, Salt and Baking Soda Scrub

Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, which can help break-down plaque that is causing your teeth to look yellow. It also has an enzyme called malic acid, which may help to remove surface stains. The salt acts as an abrasive portion of the paste, physically scrubbing away stain-causing gunk, and the baking soda is an extra touch that you can choose to leave out if you’d prefer (I just like to add it to anything involving my teeth.)
You will need…
-1-3 large strawberries
-A pinch of seat salt
-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (optional)
Directions
Mash the berries into a pulp, and add a pinch of sea salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda, if you’re using it. Wipe any extra saliva off your teeth with a paper towel, and then apply a generous portion of the mixture to a toothbrush and apply. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, then rinse. Do this nightly.

3. Coconut Oil Rinse

I know this sounds absolutely mad (I thought it was crazy too when I first read about it) but rinsing your mouth with coconut oil (called ‘oil pulling’) is a unique, old, remedy that people swear by to help whiten teeth. It doesn’t sound like the most pleasant thing in the world, but I actually don’t mind the taste, and I think it does make a difference in the color of your teeth. It won’t make a difference by “bleaching” per say, but lauric acid in coconut oil can rid your teeth of bacteria found in plaque that can make them yellow. It is also supposed to promote gum health, and help keep your breath fresh.
You will need…
-About a tablespoon of coconut oil
Directions
In the morning, before you brush your teeth, scoop out a tablespoon or a little less (depending on the size of your mouth) of coconut oil. You can either soften it, or just put it in your mouth (I usually do the latter, and just let it soften.) Push, swish, and “pull” the oil through and around your teeth for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.
Note: You can use either of the pastes after you have brushed your teeth at night if you prefer.
Are these remedies going to guarantee ridiculously white teeth within a week? No. You may start to see a difference, but it won’t be as instant as the commercial products. In the end, will your teeth be so white people squint when you open your mouth? No. And I like it better that way. I’ve found that since using these my teeth are indeed whiter, my mouth overall feels healthier and it doesn’t look like I bleached the life out of myself. We live in a world where photo-shopped faces (and teeth) and make-up covered celebrities set the standard for how we look, which makes life hard for people who like, well, real people. As a result we seem to forget what’s good for ourselves, and spend a ton of money just to look like the ideal. By going natural here, you can save the money for something else, feel better about yourself, and have a healthier mouth (and health is what, in the end, creates real beauty.)

Teeth Whitening Tips

– Routine. Set up a routine using these remedies and stick to it, at all costs, to get the most out of them.
– While not “natural” per say, using 3% (I repeat, 3%) hydrogen peroxide as a mouth rinse can whiten your teeth through the process of oxidation. It is an active indigent in many OTC whitening kits, but is often times found in much higher (and expensive) combinations in them.
– It’s fairly common knowledge, and difficult in today’s world, but try to avoid dark drinks, such as coke and coffee that stain your teeth.
